Life lately

Thought I'd share a smattering of recent happenings around here. Despite the COVID craziness, life is good and we feel very blessed. I have times of great stress, frustration, and fear for the future, and then I need to remind myself of a question that I asked myself in my personal scripture study as I studied about how to increase my trust in God. The question was, "When has God ever let me down?" As I pondered this question, I realized I could answer, "Never!" Always has He been there, helping me through difficult times and blessing me despite my lack of faith and being undeserving. So I am trying to press forward in faith as we enter virtual schooling starting this week for Robbie at home, virtual schooling for Clara at the high school wearing a mask, in-person preschool for Henry with a mask, and a busy Benjy thrown in for fun.

We have had so many cucumbers this year, which has been super fun but also a bit overwhelming. I made refrigerator pickles for the first time, which actually tasted really yummy. Next year I want to grow Kirby cucumbers, which are technically the correct ones for pickles.

We also made so many things out of zucchini. Zucchini bread, zucchini muffins, pizza crust, pizza topping, sauteed, zucchini cake, brownies, and zucchini boats. I finally pulled them out because I just didn't want another.

Michael is just the best dad. The.best. This was taken on our anniversary. 18 years, can you believe it??!

We were so happy to have a visit from Grandma and Grandpa for Melody and Matt's marriage ceremony. Robbie showed Grandma his Pokemon cards, which was a real gift of time.

Selfie with Grandpa.

The boys had a blast with Michael and some friends, the Petersons and the Robertsons, at Smith Mountain Lake.

Michael and the kids played "king of the raft."

Henry and his friend, Gracie Peterson.

Michael and Clark Robertson, who is such a great young man and reminds Michael of himself at that age.

We went on a hike before Melody left to celebrate our anniversary in advance. It was a magical hike up to Bear Fence Gap.

The mist just blew in over us in a big cloud, moving quickly and swirling all around us as it covered up the sun.

I wanted to take a picture of the study wall with creations the kids made this summer. We started out strong with our schedule and then petered out as the summer went on.

Oh Benjy. This kid is something else. Here he is helping himself to bandaids. This last week or two alone, he got into my makeup and broke my bronzer, blush, powder, and eyeshadow, I found him with frozen mixed berries on the living room floor, he emptied the staples box all over the study floor and dumped push pins onto the kitchen floor, wrote on the study desk with a permanent marker, pulled the plants out that I had just planted in our front pots . . . I could go on. I had to call poison control a few weeks ago for his ingestion of apparently 13 (!!) of my Synthroid tablets--mercifully no side effects were ever noted, which the poison control lady said was common. Benjy likes to slide the kitchen stools over to the pantry and get into the nuts or the pretzels and chocolate chips (the other day he opened a new bag in the pantry). He also gets into the refrigerator, messes with the water dispenser, eats cheese and leaves it around the house, et cetera et cetera. He is so much fun but man, we can't leave him alone for a minute.

The other day Robbie wanted to brush Clara's hair. It was a very sweet moment.

I had to record our home church chart for memory's sake. Home church has its pros and cons. It's going all right, all things considered. My last couple of home Primarys have gone pretty well, which gives me hope. Last week Robbie and Henry each gave a talk on prophets. And this week at actual church, Robbie bore his testimony for the first time in front of the congregation (of less than 25 people allowed, all wearing masks). It was awesome and I felt the Spirit. We were super proud of him. He also willingly fasted breakfast and snack (which almost killed him, he felt), and he paid a little fast offering in addition to his tithing. I have felt that Satan is working on him pretty hard these days, so I was proud of him for making good choices.

Last week, Michael took Henry to a boxing gym here in town to try out some equipment.

He had a lot of fun, and we're going to purchase some of the equipment and see if it helps the kids release some aggression in a safe and healthy way. We'll see how it goes.

We enjoyed a summer rainy day a couple of weeks ago and the kids had fun playing outside in the water.

We did most of our summer outings this year and a good handful of the creations.

We went to the Luray Zoo yesterday, which is a small rescue zoo near us. Benjy insisted on wearing a mask, which was pretty cute. He is demonstrating the improper way to wear a mask, which drives me nuts to see when I am out. Why would you wear it if you aren't even wearing it right? Don't get me wrong, I hate wearing one, but goodness, at least wear it properly.

The Capuchin monkeys in the cage to our right were really fun to watch.

This picture was taken back in 2011. Time flies!

I had no idea I'd be back 9 years later with three boys in tow. Wow.

The other day, Michael mowed the lawn with Benjy on his back so I could be free to make dinner without Benjy's help in the kitchen. What a stud.

My phone is filled with selfies of Clara. Had to post this one.

Funny kid comments

I have individual blogs for the kids where I normally record their funny sayings (there are so many but occasionally I remember a few), but I wanted to share some here:

"Raisins!" Benjy said, as he bent over in the grass. We fortunately stopped him in time, informing him they were rabbit droppings.

"Never seen a cuter bum than that," Robbie commented, as he looked at Benjy lying on his tummy in the bathtub. "Except mine," he continued. When Henry responded incredulously, he amended, "When I was a baby."

"I said NO!" Benjy yelled at me today during lunch (I can't remember what he was upset about now, but I started laughing.) "It not funny!" he insisted. I couldn't help but keep laughing.

"I want to talk to real people, not like, adults," Clara informed me yesterday in the car.

Matt and Melody's Marriage Ceremony

Matt and Melody were married in our home last weekend. Matt's family, the Allreds, drove down from Pennsylvania, and Michael's parents drove up from Atlanta. (We had a great dinner with Matt's parents a couple of days previous and enjoyed getting to know them.) Their friends and family Zoomed in (a new verb for the Zoom app that has arisen since COVID), and Michael shared some beautiful thoughts on the plan of salvation at the beginning. Then we had lunch and enjoyed time together before the happy couple left on their honeymoon. We are excited for their sealing, hopefully next month, in Provo.

Three musketeers.

The men.

The ladies.

My favorites.

The whole crew (Matt's brother, Andrew, age 17, is on the far right).

With Michael's parents.

Beautiful smiles.

Melody and I had a lot of discussion about her flower crown, whether she should get a bouquet, etc. I think she made the right choice but just opting for the crown.

I was grateful the greenery turned out so well--Suellen put in some extra roses, which turned out really nicely.

The table.

Enjoying some lunch (copycat Cafe Rio and fruit salad).

Getting ready to cut the cake!

The Cupcake Company (local to Harrisonburg) did a great job on the cake. I added the greenery and roses. The cake was really rich but delicious.

We are happy for them both! I am grateful we were able to help them as they begin this new chapter of their lives together.

Fun with Melody

Early in June, we were talking with Melody on the phone, who was bummed out that life in Provo was so frustrating with COVID having closed things down. We invited her to come and stay with us for the summer and we would pay her for helping babysit/do housekeeping, etc. A few days before she was flying out, she announced that she and her boyfriend, Matt Allred, were engaged! Due to COVID and the limitations on temple attendees, they were married civilly by Michael here at the house last weekend. Here are some pics over the summer.
The kids were thrilled to have Melody back. It took a little time for Benjy to warm back up to her, though.
Iron Woman.
Melody joined us on a few family outings, like this beautiful hike to South River Falls in Shenandoah.
At the falls.
Matt came down from Pennsylvania one weekend, and the boys loved wrestling with him. They already started calling him Uncle Matt.  He was very patient with the energy of our kiddos.
I took some engagement photos of the beautiful couple at a local wildflower farm.
Are they cute or what?
Matching smiles.
The golden hour of the day really is magical for lighting.
Awww.
This was the last set of shots of the day and was taken as an afterthought as we headed to the car. It ended up being the one she picked for their announcement. So lovely.
Robbie loved the car that Melody gave him for his birthday. She also bought Benjy a cute car potty for his birthday.
I was grateful for Melody's help and support at Robbie's baptism. She shared her thoughts on baptism during the interlude while Robbie and Michael were getting dressed and helped watch Henry and Robbie during the baptism.
Happy 22nd birthday, Melody!
I made her a big ice cream cake but opted to not put on the 22 candles.

And now she's a married woman!

Clara's Ballet Recital

Clara participated in her dance studio's performance of Arabian Nights this past weekend. They had a tough time with COVID, but her teacher, Miss Julia, taught Zoom classes so that they could still keep learning. Clara would practice her routine in the kitchen.

Here she is, ready to go! She couldn't wear her ballet slippers until she was about to perform on stage.

So beautiful.

Both inside and out.

Clara was so graceful and confident on the stage. I was impressed by and proud of her hard work.

Erin Chilcott, Clara's ABA therapist, came to support her. How cool is that?!

They performed at Oakdale Park in Bridgewater to help provide safe social distancing. Daddy and the boys came a little later, and the boys enjoyed seeing Jafar, Aladdin, and Abu. Robbie said afterward how well Clara did and that "she was the best." She really is.

Benjy turns 2

This sweet boy turned 2 years old last week. His day wasn't too different (not ready for breakfast in bed yet!), but that was just fine by everyone.

After dinner, he got to open a few presents. Here is his spiffy backpack!

The blower was definitely the favorite gift for everyone under the age of 9, ahem.

Checking out a sweet book from Nana and Bapa.

Two candles on his chocolate zucchini cake. Two!

I forgot to give him a fork right away, so he just figured he'd dive in.

It was a hit.

We are so grateful that Heavenly Father sent you to us, Benjy!
