We had a wonderful visit from Michael's family last week. The week flew by far too quickly, and we were left wishing they could live closer. But I guess the distance is what makes these visits and memories all the more precious.
On our to-do list was a trip up to Shenandoah National Forest.
We enjoyed a relaxing picnic (at the same place we had taken my parents a
few months previous) and then went on the Bear Fence hike. I say the picnic was relaxing--it certainly was for the ladies. The boys--sans Grandpa--were compelled to compete (no details needed, but the events involved feats of jumping and balancing on a horse railing, among other things) for the alpha-male role. Of course my husband won.
We knew the hike was only a little over a mile (easy peasy, right?) loop with a climax of a
360-degree view at the top . . . we just didn't realize that there was a
little effort required to enjoy the view. Good thing Clara is still light enough to be piggy-backed . . . and that Michael is nimble. We were doing some surprisingly challenging climbing.
What could be better than resting on a mountain with Grandma? (Apparently sticking your tongue out while resting on a mountain with Grandma.)
Together forever.
Although doing semi-risky activities are scary for a wuss like me, it was a great experience.
You guys discover the grandest adventures...hiking mole hill, running into barbed wire fences, going mountain climbing with Clara hanging on for dear life to Michael's back...lucky, lucky, lucky!
